National & Higher National Diploma for Nurse ( NVQ LEVEL - 05& 06 )
This course is especially designed for those who wish to pursue a career in Nursing and Those who enjoy working with people and caring about promoting good health may be interested in pursuing such a career. The changing demand for nurses creates a variety of job openings in many places. The nurses can work in hospitals, universities, schools, nursing homes, ambulance services, elderly care facilities, airlines, factories, Construction sites, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), research organizations and many other healthcare facilities. Nurses can be involved in caring for the sick, rehabilitation, promoting health, preventing disease, teaching in health classes, teaching in a Nurses Training School and a host of other activities.
In the hospital, a Nurse will have the ability to practice in trauma/emergency, critical care, outpatient and inpatient surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, cardiology, rehabilitation, and psychiatry. In the community, the Nurses can practice in physicians' offices, clinics, schools, occupational and public health systems.
Qualification
- G.C.E A/L – 3 Passes in any stream OR
- G.C.E O/L - 06 subjects with Nurse Assistant Certificate from Recognized Institutions OR
- Should have completed the foundation programme conducted by St.judy or by any other recognized institutions.

- The duration of the course for regular students is 3 year (36 months) Full Time
National Diploma For Nurse
- The duration of the course for regular students is 3 year (36 months) Part Time (Week end only)
Medium
Successful Completion
- National Diploma in General Nursing (NVQ 6)for candidates who complete the Ministry of Health PHSRC Recognized Nurses Unit Curriculum successfully.
- General Nursing will be awarded at the end of three academic years.
- NTS awarding the Diploma - St.Judy Nurses Training School Sri Lanka
- About 30 students are admitted each year to the St.Judy NTS - Kalmunai for National Diploma in General Nursing.
EVALUATION
Scheme of Semester Eveluation
- A written examination at the middle of the each semester will be held and the marks obtained in the examination will be counted as for 25% in each semester.
- A written examination at the end of each semester will be held and the marks obtained in the examination, covering the assigned modules of the respective semester will be counted as for 75%. These marks will be added for 100% and graded for the particular semester.
COMPLETING THE COURSE SEMESTER
- Students will be considered to have completed the course only if they earn grade C or above.
IMPROVING GRADE
A student who obtains grades of C- , D+, D or F in any of the semesters may
1. Follow that semester again at his/her own cost or
2. Take part in the class room exercises and final examination of that semester or semesters again at his / her own cost in order to improve his/her grade.
3. Only two more attempts will be given for this purpose and the maximum grade will be given C.
